Why Health Equity Matters in Fresno

In the Central Valley, zip codes and structural inequities too often dictate health outcomes and life expectancy. Working-class families, rural agricultural workers, immigrants, and communities of color routinely confront systemic barriers to essential care, including insurance gaps, language isolation, clinic shortages, and transportation deficits.

We connect residents with primary care, mental health services, dental clinics, and enrollment support, while actively dismantling the structural barriers that treat health as a privilege rather than a fundamental human right.

We promote health equity by influencing policies that expand access to preventative medical care, increase investment in community-driven health solutions, and improve long-term outcomes across Fresno County.

The COVID-19 Equity Project (CEP)

Fresno BHC co-developed and led the Immigrant/Refugee Coalition within CEP alongside 17+ partner organizations, public health researchers, and over 100 bilingual/multilingual community health workers. The initiative provided culturally competent education in 12+ languages, mobile vaccination clinics, and direct wraparound resources to over 25,000 residents, serving as a recognized model for equity-driven public health delivery.

Expanding Healthcare Access for All

Organizing community members to protect and expand comprehensive Medi-Cal access for all residents regardless of age or documentation status, while pushing for language access standards in regional clinics and hospitals.

Policy and Systems Change

Advancing long-term, community-driven solutions that shift municipal budgets and regional health policies toward preventative, culturally concordant care and systemic equity.

Resource Navigation and Direct Supports

Connecting families directly to care through our community health worker (CHW) network and regional hub, from Federally Qualified Health Centers (FQHCs) to behavioral health and dental services.

Youth Leadership in Public Health

Training emerging young advocates through paid internships to lead grassroots education, conduct community-based research, and mobilize peers for public health solutions.
