Invest In Fresno Parks

Fresno Building Healthy Communities helped spur the #Parks4All movement after listening to young Black, Brown, and Southeast Asian young people who called on us to help fix our parks and expand access to recreational opportunities. Now we need politicians to do their part by implementing Measure P fully.

Measure P is entering its fifth year of implementation but have our parks improved?

We, the people, have done our part. We raised our voice, organized our neighbors, and taxed ourselves for more and better parks. It’s up to the politicians to implement Measure P as envisioned by the voters and residents of Fresno.

Over the next 30 years, Measure P will generate $1.5B of dedicated funding for parks, arts, and trails.

#Parks4All

Fresno Building Healthy Communities helped spur the #Parks4All movement after listening to young Black, Brown, and Southeast Asian young people who called on us to help fix our parks and expand access to recreational opportunities. Through the leadership and vision of these young people, thousands of Fresnans came together under the Fresno for Parks Coalition to do what politicians refused to do: invest in parks, trails, and cultural arts programming.

The City of Fresno continues to fight against Fresno Building Healthy Communities in court and has refused to reimburse us for the legal fees we have incurred to date.

Creating #Parks4All

In 2018, after ranking dead last among large cities in the U.S. for park quality and availability for several years in a row (and currently ranked 98 out of 100 major U.S. cities) City of Fresno residents took action and wrote, collected signatures, and passed Measure P – a ⅜-cent sales tax to fund improvements and maintenance of existing public parks, build and maintain new parks and trails, and support local arts and cultural amenities.

In November 2018, the measure received 52% of the vote. But, the City of Fresno refused to implement the measure. Fresno Building Healthy Communities sued the City of Fresno on behalf of the people of Fresno to protect our democracy and ensure the will of people did not get ignored. After two years of litigation, the courts affirmed that citizen-driven measures require a simple majority for passage and that, in fact, Measure P had been approved by the voters. The City of Fresno began collecting money on July 1, 2021.

Although the courts have ruled that Measure P is the law of the land, the City of Fresno continues to fight against Fresno Building Healthy Communities in court and has refused to reimburse us for the legal fees we have incurred to date.
