Community Health Worker Certification Program Graduation

21 New Leaders. One Healthier Future.

Community Health Worker Graduation

The first cohort of the Community Health Worker Certification Program has officially graduated, and we couldn’t be prouder. Twenty-one participants completed months of training, building real-world skills that will open doors to new jobs, better pay, and a stronger future.

A Community Victory

We have always believed that a healthy economy begins with healthy people. The Community Health Worker Certification Program brings that belief to life. Through this program, participants learned to navigate the healthcare system, communicate effectively with doctors and patients, understand public health challenges in Fresno County, and use technology to share accurate, life-saving information.

Many entered the program with limited experience in digital tools or health advocacy. They’re leaving ready to step into professional roles with clinics, nonprofits, and local health agencies – or to use their skills to make a difference right where they live.

These graduates will help families connect to care, assist seniors in accessing health services, and bring health education to neighborhoods that have been overlooked for far too long.

Skills That Strengthen the Economy

Every graduate now has the ability to gain state-recognized certification, giving them access to a growing workforce. Community health workers are in demand across California, which means these new professionals are stepping into an expanding field with real-world skills including:

  • Digital literacy to use computers, manage documents, and apply for jobs online
  • Health communication to explain complex medical information in clear, relatable ways
  • Leadership and advocacy to learn how to speak up for their communities in public spaces
  • Career preparation to build resumes, write professional emails, and master interview skills

Each skills builds confidence, and each success leads to another opportunity, creating a ripple effect that will positively impact families and neighborhoods throughout Fresno County.

Thank You to Our Partners

We couldn’t have done this alone. The success of this first cohort is truly the result of incredible partnership and shared vision.

We want to give a heartfelt thank you to Fresno State’s Central Valley Health Policy Institute (CVHPI), Cultiva La Salud, and Friends of Calwa for helping bring this program to life. Together, we’ve created a successful, repeatable model that blends academic training with real-world community experience.

CVHPI provided expertise in public health and workforce development. Cultiva La Salud helped connect participants with culturally relevant health education and outreach. Friends of Calwa offered on-the-ground community insight and trusted relationships that made learning personal and practical.

Looking Ahead to Bigger Dreams and a Brighter Future

The success of this first cohort is just the beginning. Recruitment is already underway for the next group of community health workers, and we’re expecting an even larger turnout. We’re expanding our reach, refining our curriculum, and building pathways for graduates to move into paid roles within the health system. Our long-term vision is bold but simple: to make Fresno County a national model for community-driven health and economic development.

Imagine dozens, even hundreds of residents across the county trained as certified health workers. Neighbors helping neighbors, connecting families to care and supporting local clinics while reducing barriers to health access. That is the future we envision for Fresno County.

These 21 graduates are proof that when we invest in people, we invest in Fresno’s future.
