Great Team in the Great Outdoors

In April, the entire Fresno Building Healthy Communities team stepped out of the office on to the trail to explore the San Joaquin River Gorge, a scenic treasure in the Central Valley that connects with the 330-mile San Joaquin River, the second longest river in California. The Gorge is full of remarkable cultural, recreational, and natural wonders.

The San Joaquin River Gorge (the Gorge) provides critical access to healthy regional recreational opportunities and fuels America’s outdoor recreation-based economy while promoting public health, which is a cornerstone of our mission at Fresno Building Healthy Communities.

In April, our team spent a day at the Gorge, a special recreation management area along the river between Millerton Lake and the Sierra Nevada foothills. The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) and the US Forest Service manage it. In 2012, the BLM recommended the Gorge for protection as a National Wild & Scenic River, which would help preserve the only remaining free-flowing segment of the San Joaquin River in the Sierra Nevada foothills. Fresno BHC supports designating the San Joaquin River Gorge as part of the National Wild & Scenic Rivers System to protect its unique natural and cultural value and ensure Fresnans can access this beautiful outdoor space for generations to come.

Want to support the Gorge? We need a congressional champion to finally add this river segment to the National Wild and Scenic Rivers System. Contact your congressmember and ask them to support adding the San Joaquin River Gorge to the National Wild and Scenic Rivers System. Find your congressmember at whoismyrepresentative.com. Meanwhile, to learn more about the Gorge, visit San Joaquin River Gorge – Fresno BHC and head out to the Gorge and explore the many trails in the area!
